Nico, formerly known as Icarus!, is an up and coming funkateer from Distrito Capital in Colombia. Staying true to how he describes his sound (Electro Funk, Nu Disco & French House), he gives today’s EDM-lovers a dose of our roots in classic R&B grooves, hence his sample of Janet Jackson’s Black Cat in his track entitled AFRAID, giving Janet’s distinguished vocals a bed of phat synth & guitar plucks to rest on.
This was released prior to his most popular EP, F.A.K.E., which was shown to me by fellow music-lover and close friend Ashley, who derives inspiration from sounds of Nico’s style and other sources and releases tracks under the name, Aeroux. I was instantly enticed by his classic disco vibe; the bouncy bass lines instantly got me on my feet and dancing, which is rare, specifically for me. Unsure of whether he sampled the vocals of another song or collaborated with a vocalist, I still adore how the vocals bring a defined rhythmic element to its melody in F.A.K.E.
This aspect remains consistent in the other track on the EP, Understand. The highlight of this track, though, is its unpredictability. It starts out progressing with ease, then starts throwing in some strong vocal samples, and before you know it, wham! He goes into an epic bridge, making the people out on the floor lose their minds at only one minute in. To conclude, this guy is definitely worth keeping an eye on for those who like to funk, I know I sure do!
