Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is usually penned for his infectious hip hop medleys, but took a rather interesting turn in the opposite direction with his latest album, Awaken, My Love!. It’s not that the album is bad however – it’s actually a crucial and pivotal release in Gambino’s discography, further displaying that Donald Glover has the ability to appeal to multiple audiences.
Awaken, My Love! had two lead singles, both with their strengths and weaknesses. We’ve decided to pinpoint our focus on his second single, Redbone though.
Redbone could be a reference to many things. It could be a reference to the great 70s band, sharing the same name, known for their popular and never-aging, Come And Get Your Love. However, what Redbone does to stand out, is to usher in a completely new sound that not many fans had heard from Gambino before.
On our first listen, this track most definitely sounded like Prince – and that’s a compliment on one of the highest levels, in our opinion. There’s just something so contagious about this track – whether it may be the lyrics, or the slow and sluggish basses which never fail to please our insides. We’ve fallen in love with this song, for real.
