Without colour, our world would be bland and tasteless, and it would be hard to comprehend what we see in our day-to-day lives. Jamie xx’s In Colour, provides a deeper and more soluble, meaning of the word ‘colour’, consisting of 9 rock-solid tracks which enlighten you for the 50 minutes that it’s playing for.
Gosh, samples an old Radio 1 excerpt which was never aired. These definitely add to the massive buildup of this track, which eventually explodes the Garage themed track into life. Sleep Sound and SeeSaw are both mellow and chilled out tracks, with SeeSaw most notably having vocals from fellow bandmate, Romy. It isn’t the last time she provides vocals for this album either.
Obvs, (obviously) is a very different track, with steelpans which paint a very interesting picture. It definitely gives out much more of a ‘summer’ vibe compared to the other tracks.
One of the standout tracks on this album is Loud Places, a track which features, yet again, Romy from The xx on vocals. Combined with the pleasantry of a group choir as backup vocals, this track shapes up to be one of the most unique songs on the album. On the complete other side of the spectrum, though, is I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times), featuring rappers Young Thug and Popcaan who spit some amazing verses. Did I also mention that it samples the 70s hit, Good Times by The Persuasions?
Lastly, we have Girl, with its swiftly manipulated vocals which bring the track down to its bare-bones, something we don’t see nowadays with music. Chills definitely get sent down my spine with the sheer complexity of the instruments and vocals which, amalgamate together in perfect harmony.
All in all, In Colour cannot be afforded to miss. Whether you like the sophisticated sounds that the album offers, or not, it’s definitely worth a listen.
