IGLOOGHOST has only just dropped on the scene recently. But, his unique approach to music has racked up a healthy amount of followers in a short space of time, while impressing Brainfeeder label boss, Flying Lotus, along the way.
At the time of writing, IGLOOGHOST has produced two EPs for the label and a full length LP is in the works.
FS: What’s up everyone? Today, we have a cool, calm, and collected (just kidding) interview with IGLOOGHOST, one of Brainfeeder’s premier producers from the UK. Let’s jump right into it, shall we?
So, you’ve released two EPs on the Brainfeeder label, along with plans for a full length LP – is it overwhelming thinking about how far you’ve come?
IG: YEAH, I GUESS IT’S PRETTY WEIRD. I TRY NOT TO THINK ABOUT IT & GET TOO HAPPY WITH MYSELF THO, BECAUSE I KNOW I’VE ONLY DONE A TINY BIT OF WHAT I’M WORKING ON CREATING TBH. THIS PROLLY DOESN’T WORK FOR EVERYONE, BUT I’M PERSONALLY WAY MORE PRODUCTIVE WHEN I’M SELF-CRITICAL YA FEEL?
FS: 100% makes sense. Was there anything that hindered your progress along the way though?
IG: I STARTED GRAPHIC DESIGN SKOOL LIKE OCTOBER & DROPPED OUT IN DECEMBER HAHAHA. THAT WAS STUPID.
FS: Just because something doesn’t do what you planned for it doesn’t mean it’s useless, right? Well, let’s get technical. What do you use to produce your music?
IG: HONESTLY ITS ALL MADE BY MY MOUTH. I HAVE A 2008 MODEL NINTENDO DSi & I JUST RECORD MYSELF BEATBOXING AND MAKING NOISES. LITERALLY EVERY SINGLE LAYER IS JUST ME OVERLAYING MY VOICE.
IT’S PHYSICALLY EXHAUSTING & SOMETIMES I CAN’T MAKE MUSIC FOR MONTHS BECAUSE MY THROAT SWELLS UP FROM EXCEEDING MAXIMUM USAGE. I START VOMITING THIS PALE YELLOW BILE OVER MY DSi & THEN I HAVE TO GET IT REPAIRED. I ONLY MAKE MUSIC SO I CAN COLLECT ENOUGH MONEY TO FIX MY DSi WHEN I PROJECTILE VOMIT OVER IT.
FS: That is quite possibly one of the most disgusting things we’ve ever read, haha. Your response is just graphic enough, with some subtleties. But, at least we know the truth! Anyways, you’ve also experimented with the Grime genre in your hit track, Ell. Tell us a bit more about that?
IG: I BEEN SCREWING AROUND W GRIME FOR A GOOD WHILE LIKE THESE FOOLS AINT EVEN KNOW. I GOT SOME OLD WILEY BEATS REMIXES OUT THERE. ALSO THE NAME IGLOOGHOST MAKES ME SOUND LIKE I MAKE PURIST ESKI BEATS LOL.
BUT UH YES THE ELL TRACK IS WITH A RLLY RLLY RLLY COOL MC CALLED ROCKS FOE. HE’S NOT JUST ANOTHER GUY RAPPING LIKE THIS BOY DOES HIS OWN BEATS, HE HAS THIS WEIRD KINGDOM LOOKIN AESTHETIC GOING ON, & SOMETIMES RAPS SPONTANEOUSLY IN OTHER LANGUAGES MID RADIO-SESSION.
THIS LIL MOMENT ON RADIO 1XTRA WAS ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS I’VE SEEN THIS YEAR FOR SURE.
FS: The Grime scene appears to be skyrocketing in popularity at the moment. Artists, like yourself, have played a massive role in its adoption. But what about your other releases? Apart from your new album, do you have any collaborations in the pipeline?
IG: I BEEN TURNING EVERYONE DOWN BECAUSE I’M IN FULL HERMIT MODE HAHAHA SORRY EVERYONE COOL WHO’S HIT ME UP. AFTER MY ALBUM COMES OUT I LEGIT JUST WANNA BE PRODUCER-BOY FOR A FEW MONTHS THO & PRODUCE WEIRD SICK SONGS FOR VOCALISTS AND MCs.
FS: Last question – I hope you’re ready! We know you’re quite a big fan of Flying Lotus. So, what’s your favorite Brainfeeder release, outside of any Flying Lotus record?
IG: THAT’S A COOL QUESTION. NOSTALCHIC BY LAPALUX STILL ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMS & BLOWS MY MIND. IT’S SOOO FULL OF THESE INSANE SOUNDS THAT R FLYING AT YOU EVERY SECOND. I LOVE IT BECAUSE I HAVE NO IDEA HOW HE MADE IT. THAT TRACK FLOWER IS SO CRAZY. JUST THE DRUM PATTERNS ALONE R CRAZY TO ME.
